Guidelines for Borrowing Libraries
- Most materials in the general circulating collection are loaned, however consideration is given to U/CL patrons’ curriculum needs first.
- Ready reference, regular reference, course reserve material, leisure reading titles, videotapes, and kits are not loaned.
- Microfilm and microfiche are not normally loaned; a photocopy or electronic copy is sent instead. However, if the film or fiche were necessary, it could be loaned with the proviso of "in library use only."
- Materials in the BC Archives or Special Collections are not loaned; only photocopies of an article are provided.
- Materials are not loaned to private companies.
- Classic or common titles that should be available in the local public library are not loaned (i.e., Huckleberry Finn).
- Entire periodicals are not loaned; only photocopies of the requested article.

Introduction
The U/CL provides ILL for current students, staff, and faculty of BCC and FAU by obtaining library materials unavailable at the U/CL for their academic and scholarly research. Non-affiliated patrons must request items through their local public library.
ILL is an essential component of a library program that greatly expands the range of materials available to patrons. Though the exchange of materials between libraries is an important element in the provision of library service and is encouraged, ILL is not a substitute for collection development. U/CL also observes the ILL policies set forth by SEFLIN (Southeast Florida Library Information Network) and FLIN (Florida Library Information Network).
Responsibilities of Borrowing Libraries
- Loan period--ILL materials are loaned for 28 days.
- Renewal--ILL materials may be renewed if there is no hold or request on the material. Contact the U/CL ILL department at least two business days before the due date.
- Lost or Damage to materials—In compliance with the U.S. Interlibrary Loan Code, borrowing libraries are responsible for the safety and return of borrowed material, including compensation (as determined by the supplying library) to the supplying library for the expense of replacement or repair of lost or damaged books or materials by their patrons. The U/CL cost includes a billing fee. Refunds are issued for found books that are returned within one year of the date due, minus the billing fee.
- Cost-The U/CL does not charge for the material(s) that it loans.
- Processing Requests--Most requests are processed by the U/CL ILL Department within one business day. However, it may take up to two weeks for the borrowing institution to receive the material(s). Please do not place duplicate requests for the same item(s). Contact the ILL Department if you have any questions.
Request for Exceptions
To ensure the availability of U/CL materials to its patrons, U/CL agrees to loan its material to other libraries with the exceptions listed under Guidelines for Borrowing Libraries.
Requests for exemptions to these guidelines may be referred to the U/CL Associate Dean for Public Services.
